Pete the Cat

Pete the Cat: Rocking in My School Shoes - Eric Litwin, James Dean

This book is a great way to start the school year. Students love the Pete the Cat series and I think it is good for the lower grades to adapt to being back at school. It can show them that school may not be as scary as it seems. The book could be used as a read aloud on the first day or the near the beginning of the school year. The students could decorate a piece of paper shaped as a shoe and tell all about themselves on it. This could be a project that is hung in the classroom or hallway.

If You Give a Moose a Muffin

If You Give a Moose a Muffin Book and Audio CD Set (Paperback) - Laura Numeroff, Felicia Bond

This a great book for lower elementary students. It is a story of a moose who starts wanting more and more things as he goes through his day. It is an easy story to teach cause and effect. The students could tell what happens after the moose is given something. Also, this story would be great for a lesson on sequencing events in a story. The teacher could also encourage the students to read the other sequels to this book.

How Full is Your Bucket?

How Full Is Your Bucket? For Kids - Tom Rath, Maurie J. Manning, Mary Reckmeyer

This is a great first day of school read aloud. It is a story of a boy who has a imaginary bucket above his head as well as his peers. As the day goes on, the actions and words from others affect his bucket. It is a great way to teach students how to treat each other as well as how words affect others both positively and negatively. It is a great read to start off the new year!

The Biggest Valentine Ever

The Biggest Valentine Ever - Steven Kroll, Jeni Bassett

This is a great book to use around Valentine's Day. It is a short story about two mice who are best friends. They have the same Valentine and begin to compete against each other to make the better Valentine. The two finally decide to come together and make one giant Valentine for their teacher. I would definitely use this story as a read aloud during Valentine's Day festivities. Also, it could be used for a lesson on sequencing as well as plot elements.
